The Dangers Of Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

In need of dental care both in the home and from dentists are babies. Your child’s first teeth are bound to be healthy and strong if care is given early in his life. The primary teeth are necessary for permanent teeth to have space, which makes early intervention important. Crooked looking teeth would grow out if baby teeth fall out too early since other teeth may shift towards the empty space. To get a closer look on tmj dentist sydney visit this site.

Using your fingers or small, cool spoon on painful gums during teething would work quite well. By talking to a dentist or pediatrician, you will be able to deal with babies who still feel uncomfortable. A few days after the baby is born, parents should start wiping his gums using a damp washcloth or gauze pad.

When the first tooth appears, cleaning it with a toothbrush with very little toothpaste is recommended. You should also use a toothbrush specially designed for young children. Small soft bristled toothbrushes are recommended because they are small enough to fit into tiny mouths and gentle enough to avoid scratching delicate gums.

Those babies who have had something sweet to drink while going to sleep might develop baby bottle tooth decay. Baby teeth would be lost because of the formation of cavities due to these liquids. The devastating result if no proper treatment is given would be permanent teeth that look very crooked. Putting your baby to sleep using a pacifier or a bottle of water would be the best way to prevent baby bottle tooth decay. This site teaches you about temporomandibular joint disorder.

A child’s early dental visits could make the difference in keeping small problems from becoming big ones. The dentist will look for any sign of cavity formation or dental problems that may have come as a result of thumb sucking. The dentist may suggest tips on maintaining your child’s oral hygiene as well as give you advice on the type of diet your child should have during the visit.

The best time to teach your child why dental care is important is when they are still young. By being a good example, you achieve the first step in doing this. By practicing brushing, flossing, rinsing, and other good dental habits yourself, you influence your child to do the same things as well.

Parents should instruct kids on how to brush their teeth when they are around two or three years of age. By age five, kids should know how to brush their teeth on their own with minimal parental supervision. Since flossing requires more skill, it may take some practice before children can master it on their own. The parents of two and three year olds should be ones who would first floss their children’s teeth. Some supervision might be needed, but by age eight, the child may be able to floss by himself.

One of the natural minerals found on earth, fluoride is good for the teeth since it strengthens enamel and makes it resistant to decay. It is is essential that children get enough fluoride. Stronger and healthier teeth are formed when fluoride gets merged into developing enamel during the formation stage of teeth.

There are two ways for children to take in fluoride, which are internally or topically. By swallowing fluoride tablets and drinking fluoridated water, you take fluoride internally. A child’s teeth is further protected from cavities through topical fluoride which can be applied by a dentist or simply brushed on at home.

By adding a Mexican flavor to his trumpet-led Tijuana Brass, Herb Alpert had numerous hits. While Whipped Cream doesn’t have the same feel as some of his other efforts, it still has a 1960s swing (that would be further enhanced today by a stiff cocktail and some comfortable dancing shoes). The sultry “Tangerine” continues the fruit theme of the hit “Lemon” with an equally ripe rendition. Part of A…

Excerpt: In July 1931, Emperor Haile Selassie granted a constitution that asserted his own status, reserved imperial succession to the line of Haile Selassie, and declared that “the person of the Emperor is sacred, his dignity inviolable, and his power indisputable.” This constitution was based on the Meiji Constitution of Japan , a country educated Ethiopians considered a model because of Japan’s successful adoption of Western learning and technology. All power over central and local government, the legislature, the judiciary, and the military was vested in the emperor. The constitution was essentially an effort to provide a legal basis for replacing the traditional provincial rulers with appointees loyal to the emperor. “This text provides an underlying rationale for dealing with misbehavior, which will help students develop their own understanding of the decisions and choices one must make in developing a classroom management style of their own.” —Judie Rhoades, Western Oregon University “I wish I had read this little book and seen the accompanying videos before I began my term of 6 years of public school teaching experience in a large, diverse, and challenging high school.” —Sheila K. Jones, Miami University This text uses an interactive case study approach to guide students in understanding and implementing an effective classroom management program focused on turning sound theories into practice. The approach used is known as IOSIE (Identifying the problem – deciding on Objectives – Developing a Solution – Implementing it – Evaluating it). It analyzes eighteen traditional approaches and models used for classroom management. The steps involved in using this model are detailed in the text to help students understand the conceptual foundations of classroom management in addition to knowing how to react to a range of situations and problems. Suitable for teachers of all grade levels, this book brings students as close as possible to direct hands-on experience in a classroom setting. Special Features: •Takes students through the entire process of Special Education placement, from referral through assessment and instructional modification and adaptation. • Uses various approaches and strategies in sample case studies in every chapter to show students how different strategies rectify inappropriate classroombehavior. • Addresses contemporary classroom management issues such as bullying, gang violence, suicide prevention, child abuse, and sexual harassment. • An Instructor’s Manual containing notes on the cases and assessments for faculty can be found online by contacting

A New Model of School Discipline: Engaging Students and Preventing Behavior Problems

A New Model of School Discipline: Engaging Students and Preventing Behavior Problems

$18.13

Mounting evidence shows that zero-tolerance policies, suspensions, and restrictive security policies fail to improve school safety and student behaviors, and are linked with increased risk of dropping out. Minority students are suspended at disproportionate rates, and over a million cases of corporal punishment are reported each year. Against this dismal backdrop, David Dupper presents a transformative new model of school discipline that is preventive, proactive, and relationship-based. Unlike traditional punitive and exclusionary practices, the model developed in this Workshop volume focuses on enhancing students’ connection to school through building relationships and bolstering social skills. Drawing on the latest research about what works, and what doesn’t, this highly practical guide catalogs an array of proven and promising practices designed to engage, instead of exclude, students. Rather than illustrate a one-size-fits-all approach, it guides practitioners and administrators in identifying their school’s unique needs and selecting appropriate strategies for use at the universal, targeted, and remedial levels. A five-step strategic planning model helps schools transition toward a holistic, relationship-based approach to discipline.Boxes, bullets, evidence summaries, and practice tips make this an accessible, forward-thinking resource for school personnel seeking to engage students and reduce behavior problems in the most effective, pragmatic, and cost-efficient manner possible.

A method for introducing Artificial Perception (AP) to improve Human Behavior Representation (HBR) using agents in synthetic environments.

While psychology has shown that perception is very important for the human decision process, agent perception has not been covered in sufficient detail within the agent directed simulation field. To contribute to such a solution, an open challenge lies in capturing the knowledge of human sciences, such as psychology, and making this knowledge usable for engineers. This dissertation addresses perception by describing an experimental method where agent perception simulates human perception. In particular, it presents engineering methods based on accepted psychological approaches resulting in a proof of concept. To prove the feasibility, an Artificial Perception (AP) meta-model is presented using logical assumptions, generalized Validation and Verification (V&V) approaches, cognitive testing, and experimental comparisons with similar state-of-the-art agents. Current publications show that Human Behavior Representation (HBR) in agent simulations remains a top priority for the modeling and simulation community. Agents are a promising way to represent human behavior. However, there are limited methods for measuring and validating perception within simulated environments. Within a simulated environment, there are no clearly established methods for understanding surrogate HBR perception relationships with their authentic human behavioral representations. These present obstacles for advancing simulation of human behavior. The approach presented in this dissertation provides an engineering solution that allows bridging this gap and configuring agents based on human behavior evaluations using accepted psychological approaches, in particular, applied cognitive task analysis. In many cases, the foundation for these engineering methods and the effects of agent perception are similar to "experimental frames" with some known potential for accomplishing a task. Effects of these tasks require accurate assessments beyond face validation. Agents play a critical role in HBR’s

A predictive risk modeling system for the management of small-scale water and wastewater facilities: Toward long-term sustainability of our national parks.

In developing countries, a lack of clean drinking water often caused by poor sanitation, results in serious public health concerns. Since numerous economic development projects in the developing world compete for funds to improve public health and well being, the resources that are available for water and wastewater projects should be used as efficiently as possible to protect public health. Improvements in methods to prioritize water and wastewater projects can assist public health officials to efficiently allocate the limited resources available. This research develops a prioritization system for allocating limited resources to water and wastewater facilities in the U.S. National Parks that could have applications in developing countries. The National Park Service (NPS) has limited resources to meet its needs and in many cases provides services away from urban areas with no access to existing pubic works infrastructure. The National Parks provide an excellent test bed for evaluating improvements to management systems employed to allocate resources to enhance the visitor experience while protecting public health. This research includes the development of a risk-based decision-aiding system to help prioritize water and wastewater improvement projects to minimize potential health risks. The decision-aiding system is based on risk factors identified by subject matter experts and prioritized based on protection of public health. These risk factors when combined with field observations determine scores for specific water or wastewater improvement projects. The scores for each project are then compared to determine the priority for implementation from a public health perspective. The system can be used to select projects when funds are not available to implement all of the planned projects. The system allows the NPS to make the best use of available funds, improve water and wastewater facilities, and efficiently manage health risks. Use of this model may be extended

A scenario-based model-driven engineering framework.

Models describe the essential features of a software system and improve the system’s quality and productivity by providing a foundation of fault detection and of transformation into implementation. Unified Modeling Language (UML), with the support of many tools, is a widely used notation to build models during the requirements analysis and system design stages. The sequence diagram, one of the key UML notations, has been applied to capture requirements by representing use cases and scenarios as a sequence of events. Although sequence diagrams are intuitive for software practitioners, they are beyond non-technical stakeholders’ capacity to communicate and validate requirements using sequence diagrams. We develop the Scenario-Driven Engineering (SDE) Framework to alleviate these problems by associating requirement models with mockups of the user interface. The framework consists of a MagicDraw plug-in, which is used to display sequence diagrams and transform them into EXtensible Markup Language (XML) format, and a Microsoft Visual Studio (VS) Toolset, which links the XML representation of scenarios with mockups in VS Forms and is implemented as a VS Add-in. This SDE Framework eases non-technical stakeholders’ efforts in capturing requirements and identifying requirements errors. Non-technical stakeholders can manipulate interface mockups rather than analyzing the scenario specifications directly. In addition, this Toolset can help detect inconsistencies/incompleteness in requirements models by using rules to evaluate the mapping between mockups and scenarios. We believe our framework provides an easy way to incorporate stakeholders’ feedbacks, so as to obtain a more complete, consistent, and traceable requirements specification.

A spatially resolved kinematic study of high redshift star forming galaxies: Development and use of adaptive optics instrumentation.

This thesis presents development of new adaptive optics instruments for Keck Observatory, and describes their use to study dynamics of galaxies in the early universe. I was a leading member of the instrument team for OSIRIS, which is the first lenslet-based adaptive optics integral field spectrograph. I present my involvement with OSIRIS for lab characterization, the commissioning process, development of the data reduction pipeline, and servicing missions. Using OSIRIS with Keck Observatory’s Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics (LGS-AO), I targeted star forming galaxies within a redshift range of 1.3 ≲ z ≲ 1.7, and used the Halpha nebular line to map their dynamics at sub-kiloparsec scales. Detailed studies of Halpha emission from seven star forming galaxies near z∼1.6 (look-back time of ∼9.6 Gyr) are presented. All sources have a compact spatial extent of ∼1", with an average half-light radius of r1/2=2.8 kpc and average dereddened star formation rate of 29 M ⊙ yr–1. Based on Halpha kinematics and the most extensive modeling of beam smearing and inclined disk model fits to date at high redshift, I find these seven galaxies are dynamically distinguishable into two sets, and classify them as either merger (HDF-BX1287, HDF-BX1315, and Q1623-BX491) or disk systems (HDF-BMZ1299, Q2343-BX344, Q2343-BM133, and Q2343-BM145). This sample has the lowest residuals between disk models and observed velocities (∼20 km s–1) of any other published high redshift studies. For disk candidates, an average plateau velocity of vp=185 km s–1 is achieved within 1.0 kpc. If left unperturbed, these sources are excellent candidates to become present-day spiral galaxies. For two disk candidates, I detect [NH] emission and am able to map the ratio of [NII]/Halpha on kiloparsec scales. In both cases, [NII] emission is more concentrated than Halpha emission, and peak ratios are best explained by the presence of a weak AGN. Discovery of AGN activity within

A study of aerosol indirect effect for cumulus clouds on a global scale.

Using case study approach my investigation on aerosol’s effects on fair weather cumulus clouds shows that not only can aerosol reduce cloud droplet sizes like in the case of stratiform clouds, but also they can increase droplet sizes. Atmospheric water vapor loading explains nearly 70% of variations in the dependence of droplet size on aerosol loading for cases over Eastern United States. This finding withstands serious scrutinizing under different scenarios of artificial correlations. A further study on a global scale indicates that only two areas, Eastern US and coastal region of Southeast China, show increasing trend of droplet size with aerosol loading. Results from other regions agree well with findings from past studies further ruling out artificial correlation. Relationship between aerosol loading and cloud liquid water path differs significantly for marine stratocumulus clouds and continental cumuli. Two possible explanations for our findings are confirmed by state-of-the-art cloud resolving model simulations.;Deep convective clouds properties are shown to obey a few universally observable relationships. Their cloud top ice particle sizes are positively correlated with their vertical height and they are significantly affected by topography; their optical depth distributions have signature shapes associated with individual regions; their brightness temperature distributions show agreement with the fixed anvil temperature hypothesis. A conceptual model is proposed to understand cloud hydrometeor evolution and is used to study aerosol’s influence. Anthropogenic pollution and smoke are shown to decrease ice particle sizes by delaying coalescence process and prolonging condensational growth. As a result cloud glaciation height is increased that possibly leads to invigoration of cloud development. Dust particles are demonstrated to increase ice particle sizes probably by acting as giant condensation nuclei or ice nuclei. Ice particle size vertical structure is

 Abductive Reasoning

Abductive Reasoning

This book examines three areas in which abductive reasoning is especially important: medicine, science, and law. Douglas Walton introduces the foundations of abduction and shows how it has evolved historically into the framework of conventional wisdom in logic. Discussions draw upon recent techniques used in artificial intelligence, particularly in the areas of multi-agent systems and plan recognition, to develop a dialogue model of explanation. Cases of causal explanations in law are analyzed using abductive reasoning, and all the components are finally brought together to build a new account of abductive reasoning. Douglas Walton has published 33 books including Legal Argumentation and Evidence, One Sided Arguments: A Dialectical Analysis of Bias, Ad Hominem Arguments, Argumentation Schemes for Presumptive Reasoning, and A Pragmatic Theory of Fallacy.

This dissertation discusses two main projects from my thesis work. The first project focuses on the development of a small molecule docking program, SKATE, for drug discovery. The second project focuses on the critical analysis of the thermal stability of a mini-protein, FSD-1.;SKATE is a novel approach to small molecule docking. It removes any inter-dependence between sampling and scoring to improve docking accuracy. SKATE systematically and exhaustively samples a ligand’s conformational, rotational and translational degrees of freedom, as constrained by a receptor pocket, to find sterically allowed poses. A total of 266 ligands were re-docked to their respective receptors to assess SKATE’s performance. The results show that SKATE was able to sample poses within 2 A RMSD of the native structure for 97% of the cases. The best performing scoring function was able to rank a pose that is within 2 A RMSD of the native structure as the top-scoring pose for 83% of the cases. Compared to published data, SKATE has a higher self-docking accuracy rate than or is at least comparable to GOLD, Glide, MolDock and Surflex. The cross-docking accuracy of SKATE was assessed by docking 83 ligands to their respective receptors. The cross-docking results were comparable to those in published methods.;Mini-proteins that contain fewer than 50 amino acids often serve as model systems for studying protein folding because their small size makes long time-scale simulations possible. However, not all mini-proteins are created equal. The stability and structure of FSD-1, a 28-residue mini-protein that adopts the betabetaalpha zinc-finger motif independent of zinc binding, was investigated using circular dichroism (CD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and replica-exchange molecular dynamics (REMD). FSD-1′s broad melting transition, similar to that of a helix-to-coil transition, was observed in CD, DSC, and REMD experiments. The N-terminal beta-hairpin was found to be flexible. FSD-1′s

Acquisitions, depository institutions and the creation of value.

$49.99

The idea that value is created through acquisitions has been widely examined throughout economics literature. This dissertation builds on the theory by analyzing the valuation effects of depository institution acquisitions that occurred between the first quarter of 2000 through the first quarter of 2004. Moreover, it contributes to the growing literature on mergers and acquisitions by examining a recent period of history from which strong conclusions have yet to be drawn. First, four separate event studies are conducted to examine the effect of an announced acquisition on stock price returns of the acquirer. Specifically, the Capital Asset Pricing Model, the Market Model, and the Mean Adjusted Returns Model are employed in determining the value created through an announced acquisition. The results show that slightly less than 50% of the acquirers experienced abnormal stock price returns around the announcement of an acquisition. Furthermore, in less than 15% of these cases did the acquirers experience positive abnormal returns, thus indicating that value is not created for the acquirer through an announced acquisition. Second, this dissertation analyzes the effect of the completed acquisition on the operating income of the acquirer. In particular, the net interest income is examined using a Mean Adjusted Returns Model. The results indicate that when using return on assets as the measure of profitability of the acquirer, approximately 50% of the acquisitions led to abnormal net interest income returns. However, when return on equity is used as the measure of profitability of the acquirer, approximately 75% of the acquisitions led to abnormal net interest income returns. These post-acquisition results suggest that value is created through acquisitions. Finally, the shareholder expectations pre-acquisition are compared with the actual financial results post-acquisition. In addition to the event study comparison, the Bayesian Theorem is also employed to test if given

The Harvard Cocaine Recovery Project, a National Institute on Drug Abuse-funded randomized clinical trial, was initiated in 1986 to compare different approaches for treating cocaine abusers. Modified Dynamic Group Therapy (MDGT), one of the models used in the study, is a short-term supportive-expressive psychodynamic group approach specifically adapted for cocaine addicts. While many previous studies of substance abuse treatment were compromised by extraordinarily high dropout rates, this approach retained nearly 70% of group members for the entire length of treatment. This book describes MDGT and provides a practical guide to implementation. Based on an understanding of the psychological vulnerabilities of addicts, the MDGT model addresses the modifications in psychodynamic technique that are necessary for addicts’ needs. It focuses on four main areas of difficulty involving self-regulation; affect, self-esteem, relationship, and self-care problems. Both supportive and expressive, the approach helps group members identify, process, and modify the characterological traits that mask addict’s vulnerabilities. With this approach, a well-led group can heighten self-esteem, improve self-care, combat feelings of isolation and shame, and strengthen the individual’s capacity for positive change. Concomitant involvement with an individual therapist/counselor is encouraged as a means to support and facilitate the group therapy, especially early in group treatment, and to maintain a flexible individual and group treatment context for self-exploration and understanding. Bringing the model to life are detailed vignettes and transcripts of groups in different phases of recovery. These cases demonstrate techniques, illustrate technical issues, and illuminate major themes that unfold during treatment.

Administrative Law and Governance in Asia: Comparative Perspectives

Administrative Law and Governance in Asia: Comparative Perspectives

$38

This book examines administrative law in Asia, exploring the profound changes in the legal regimes of many Asian states that have taken place in recent years. Political democratization in some countries, economic change more broadly and the forces of globalization have put pressure on the developmental state model, wherein bureaucrats governed in a kind of managed capitalism and public-private partnerships were central. In their stead, a more market-oriented regulatory state model seems to be emerging in many jurisdictions, with emphases on transparency, publicity, and constrained discretion. This book analyses the causes and consequences of this shift from a socio-legal perspective, showing clearly how decisions about the scope of administrative law and judicial review have an important effect on the shape and style of government regulation. Taking a comparative approach, individual chapters trace the key developments in the legal regimes of major states across Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. They demonstrate that, in many cases, Asian states have shifted away from traditional systems in which judges were limited in terms of their influence over social and economic policy, towards regulatory models of the state involving a greater role for judges and law-like processes. The book also considers whether judiciaries are capable of performing the tasks they are being given, and assesses the profound consequences the judicialization of governance is starting to have on state policy-making in Asia.

“This book isn’t just another introduction to use cases. The authors have used their wealth of experience to produce an excellent and insightful collection of detailed examples, explanations, and advice on how to work with use cases.” —Maria Ericsson The toughest challenge in building a software system that meets the needs of your audience lies in clearly understanding the problems that the system must solve. Advanced Use Case Modeling presents a framework for discovering, identifying, and modeling the problem that the software system will ultimately solve. Software developers often employ use cases to specify what should be performed by the system they’re constructing. Although use case-driven analysis, design, and testing of software systems has become increasingly popular, little has been written on the role of use cases in the complete software cycle. This book fills that need by describing how to create use case models for complex software development projects, using practical examples to explain conceptual information. The authors extend the work of software visionary Ivar Jacobson, using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) as the notation to describe the book’s models. Aimed primarily at software professionals, Advanced Use Case Modeling also includes information that relates use case technique to business processes. This book presents a process for creating and maintaining use case models in a framework that can be fully customized for your organization. The authors, pioneers in the application of use cases in software development, bring their extensive experience to cover topics such as: A process model for applying a use case model How to keep your use case modeling effort on track Tips and pitfalls in use case modeling How to organize your use case model for large-system development Similarities between Advanced Use Case Modeling and the

Affective intelligence, the political persuasion process, and outcome intent: An experimental test.

$49.99

Political communication scholars aim to understand the effect of messages on political attitudes and behavior. Past scholarship has identified three sources of influence in forming attitudes and behavior: affective, cognitive, and personality factors. While much attention has been paid to the impact of each single factor, little research has attempted to integrate them. Using the Affective Intelligence model as a theoretical point of departure (Marcus, & MacKuen, 1993; Marcus et al., 2000), this dissertation explored the simultaneous—and, in some cases, interactive relationships—between these attitudinal and behavioral influences.;An experiment was conducted to answer three questions: first, do the causal claims made by Marcus and colleagues regarding the impact of emotion on political attitudes and behavior hold-up outside the realm of survey research? Second, what role does cognitive appraisals of messages play in the political persuasion process? Finally, does political efficacy moderate the relationships between induced emotional response, cognitive appraisals of messages, and political attitudes and behavior? Alternatively stated, does political efficacy link these factors together?;The results of this study should be carefully interpreted as the causal instrument underlying manipulated attitudes was not transparent. The desired experimental manipulation—induced anxiety—was not unidimensional. While inductions did induce negative affect, they simultaneously induced positive affect. Within the confines of this document, this result is discussed at length and numerous possible explanations are offered.;Structural equation modeling indicated that affect had a small impact on political attitudes and behavior. Likewise, the impact of cognitive appraisals of messages on attitudes and behavior was small. Alternatively, internal efficacy had a substantial main effect—not an interactive effect—on political attitudes and behavior.;In summary, the results

$8.83

“In many cases, the communities most ill-prepared to deal with . . . terrorism incidents,” Jason B. Moats writes in the introduction to this book, “are the rural communities that provide . . . food and crops.” Having conducted training across the country for first responders in cities, small towns, and rural communities, Moats for the first time gathers here the knowledge gleaned from research and nearly twenty years’ experience in emergency services and emergency training.Whether used in the field or in the classroom, this manual is designed to help rural communities prepare for an act of agroterrorism. It explains why the U.S. agriculture industry is a target for terrorists and how farms and farming communities across the country are vulnerable. The author lists known biological and chemical agents and their effects, explains model systems for supporting emergency response efforts, and lays out proven plans for gathering personnel and other resources in an orderly, coordinated way. In Agroterrorism: A Guide for First Responders, Moats spells out who should do what and when, providing a critically needed path through the bureaucratic maze of state, national, and interagency homeland security directives. With this book, Moats empowers those on the front lines in rural America, those charged with the responsibility of handling emergency crises in agricultural communities. Armed with the information they need, emergency response agencies, emergency managers, public health professionals, veterinary and animal health practitioners, as well as farmers and producers, will be able to answer the questions: “Where do we start?” “What do we do?” “Who is going to do it?” and “How do we pay for it?”Closing with a complete training program that includes practical exercises formatted for easy use, Agroterrorism: A Guide for First Responders contains resources vital for

 Air suspension

Air suspension

$83

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Air suspension is a type of vehicle suspension powered by an engine driven or electric air pump or compressor. This pump pressurizes the air, using compressed air as a spring. Air suspension replaces conventional steel springs. If the engine is left off for an extended period, the car will settle to the ground. The purpose of air suspension is to provide a smooth ride quality and in some cases self- leveling. While not using high pressure mineral oil, the system aims to achieve a result similar to the hydropneumatic suspension arrangement introduced in 1954 by Citroën. With a “leg up” on other companies, GM used its experience with commercial busses’ air suspension to introduce systems for its car lines, beginning with the 1958 model year. Air bags at each wheel replaced the standard coil springs, and had sensors to keep the car level under load and in turns. It was too slow to react in sudden maneuvers, however.

Algebras and Orders

$560.47

The book consists of the lectures presented at the NATO ASI on Algebras and Orders’ held in 1991 at the Universite de Montreal. The lectures cover a broad spectrum of topics in universal algebra, Boolean algebras, lattices and orders, and their links with graphs, relations, topology and theoretical computer science. More specifically, the contributions deal with the following topics: Abstract clone theory (W. Taylor); Hyperidentities and hypervarieties (D. Schweigert); Arithmetical algebras and varieties (A. Pixley); Boolean algebras with operators (B. Jonsson); Algebraic duality (B. Davey); Model-theoretic aspects of partial algebras (P. Burmeister); Free lattices (R. Freese); Algebraic ordered sets (M. Erne); Diagrams of orders (I. Rival); Essentially minimal groupoids (H. Machida, I.G. Rosenberg); and Formalization of predicate calculus (I. Fleischer). Most of the papers are up-to-date surveys written by leading researchers, or topics that are either new or have witnessed recent substantial progress. In most cases, the surveys are the first available in the literature. The book is accessible to graduate students and researchers.

Altered Egos: How the Brain Creates the Self

Altered Egos: How the Brain Creates the Self

$3.85

It may be the deepest mystery of philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience: how does the brain unite to create the self, the subjective "I"? In Altered Egos, Dr. Todd Feinberg presents a new theory of the self, based on his first-hand experience as both a psychiatrist and neurologist. Feinberg first introduces the reader to dozens of intriguing cases of patients whose disorders have resulted in what he calls "altered egos": a change in the brain that transforms the boundaries of the self. He describes patients who suffer from "alien hand syndrome" where one hand might attack the patient’s own throat, patients with frontal lobe damage who invent fantastic stories about their lives, paralyzed patients who reject and disown one of their limbs. Feinberg argues that the brain damage suffered by these people has done more than simply impair certain functions—it has fragmented their sense of self. After illustrating how these patients provide a window into the self and the mind, the author presents a new model of the self that links the workings of the brain with unique and personal features of the mind, such as meaning, purpose, and being. Drawing on his own and other evidence, Feinberg explains how the unified self, while not located in one or another brain region, arises out of the staggering complexity and number of the brain’s component parts. Lucid, insightful, filled with fascinating case studies and provocative new ideas, Altered Egos promises to change the way we think about human consciousness and the creation and maintenance of human identity.

Ambiguity and Choice in Public Policy: Political Decision Making in Modern Democracies

Ambiguity and Choice in Public Policy: Political Decision Making in Modern Democracies

$27.82

Zahariadis offers a theory that explains policymaking when ambiguity is present–a state in which there are many ways, often irreconcilable, of thinking about an issue. Expanding and extending John Kingdon’s influential multiple streams model that explains agenda setting, Zahariadis argues that manipulation, the bending of ideas, process, and beliefs to get what you want out of the policy process, is the key to understanding the dynamics of policymaking in conditions of ambiguity. He takes one of the major theories of public policy to the next step in three different ways: he extends it to a different form of government (parliamentary democracies, where Kingdom looked only at what he called the United States’ presidential organized anarchy form of government); he examines the entire policy formation process, not just agenda setting; and he applies it to foreign as well as domestic policy. This book combines theory with cases to illuminate policymaking in a variety of modern democracies. The cases cover economic policymaking in Britain, France, and Germany, foreign policymaking in Greece, all compared to the U.S. (where the model was first developed), and an innovative computer simulation of the policy process.

An Introduction to Classical Econometric Theory

An Introduction to Classical Econometric Theory

$134.95

In An Introduction to Classical Econometric Theory Paul A. Ruud shows the practical value of an intuitive approach to econometrics. Students learn not only why but how things work. Through geometry, seemingly distinct ideas are presented as the result of one common principle, making econometrics more than mere recipes or special tricks. In doing this, the author relies on such concepts as the linear vector space, orthogonality, and distance. Parts I and II introduce the ordinary least squares fitting method and the classical linear regression model, separately rather than simultaneously as in other texts. Part III contains generalizations of the classical linear regression model and Part IV develops the latent variable models that distinguish econometrics from statistics. To motivate formal results in a chapter, the author begins with substantive empirical examples. Main results are followed by illustrative special cases; technical proofs appear toward the end of each chapter. Intended for a graduate audience, An Introduction to Classical Econometric Theory fills the gap between introductory and more advanced texts. It is the most conceptually complete text for graduate econometrics courses and will play a vital role in graduate instruction.

An Introduction to Comparative Legal Models of Criminal Justice

An Introduction to Comparative Legal Models of Criminal Justice

$99.95

While in Plato’s time there may have been some truth to his belief that there can only be “one single justice, and one single law,” such is not the case today. Criminal justice systems vary widely across the world in their approaches to the problem of crime. Bringing together the collective wisdom of Cliff Roberson and Dilip K. Das, two world-renowned experts and university professors who have been involved in the criminal justice system for over thirty years, An Introduction to Comparative Legal Models of Criminal Justice presents the theme that a country’s legal model to a great extent determines the character of its police and corrections as well as its legal system. This book examines these different systems and is a useful reference guide for all criminal justice professionals.Examines Various ApproachesThe book begins with a brief overview of the five legal models. The continental (civil) system, characterized by an inquisitorial nature and practiced in most European countries, is discussed, followed by the common law model, which is known for its adversarial quality and is used in most English-speaking countries. The religion-based Islamic system and the rehabilitation-oriented Marxist system are also profiled. Those systems that are still emerging or are hybrid in nature are characterized as mixed. In some cases, the secretive nature of certain countries’ methods, especially those using extreme punishments, necessitated reliance on reports published by the U.S. State Department.By examining how other societies deal with problems of justice, criminal justice professionals will gain insight as to which police and corrections methods are likely to be the most successful in their jurisdictions, and which will create more problems than they solve.

Analysis of Caenorhabditis elegans vulval morphogenesis reveals novel mechanisms for initiation and maintenance of biological tubes .

The formation of biological tubes is common to the development of all metazoans. A simple model for studying all aspects of this complicated developmental process is the C. elegans vulva. This simple epithelial tube consists of seven toroidal-shaped cells surrounding a central lumen. Using this model, I have uncovered novel mechanisms in lumen initiation and lumen maintenance during vulval tubulogenesis. I have shown that the putative palmitoyltransferase EGL-26, belonging to the NlpC/P60 family of enzymes, is specifically required late in dorsal vulval morphogenesis. Moreover, I have shown that mutation of egl-26 results in a collapse of the dorsal vulval lumen. I also show that the conserved catalytic residues of EGL-26 are required for function in vivo, providing the first example of a function for this family of proteins in metazoan development. In addition, I have closely analyzed the role of the gonadal anchor cell in vulval morphogenesis. Using several mutants, I have shown that invasion of the vulva epithelium by the anchor cell is required for initiation of the dorsal vulval lumen. In cases where the anchor cell does not invade properly, no dorsal lumen is formed. I have confirmed that this effect is specific to morphogenesis and not due to fate or polarity defects. This work leads to a model of vulval tubulogenesis that requires the anchor cell to initiate dorsal lumen formation and EGL-26 function to maintain the lumenal structure, suggesting that initiation and maintenance are controlled separately. An understanding of these mechanisms in the C. elegans vulva will likely lead to insight into potentially conserved mechanisms in higher eukaryotes.

Analytical Methods in Fuzzy Modeling and Control

Analytical Methods in Fuzzy Modeling and Control

$159

This book is focused on mathematical analysis and rigorous design methods for fuzzy control systems based on Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models, sometimes called Takagi-Sugeno-Kang models. The author presents a rather general analytical theory of exact fuzzy modeling and control of continuous and discrete-time dynamical systems. The main attention is paid to usability of the results for the control and computer engineering community and therefore simple and easy for linguistic interpretation knowledge-bases have been used. The approach is based on the author’s theorems concerning equivalence between widely used Takagi-Sugeno systems and some class of multivariate polynomials. It combines the advantages of fuzzy system theory and classical control theory. Classical control theory can be applied to modeling of dynamical plants and the controllers. They are all equivalent to the set of Takagi-Sugeno type fuzzy rules. The approach combines the best of fuzzy and conventional control theory. It enables linguistic interpretability (also called transparency) of both the plant model and the controller. In the case of linear systems and some class of nonlinear systems, the engineer can in many cases directly apply well-known classical tools from the control theory both for analysis, and the design of the closed-loop fuzzy control systems. Therefore the main objective of the book is to establish comprehensive and unified analytical foundations for fuzzy modeling using Takagi-Sugeno rule scheme and their applications for fuzzy control, identification of some class of nonlinear dynamical processes and classification problem solver design.

 Animal Law: Cases and Materials

Animal Law: Cases and Materials

$80

The fourth edition of the premier book on animal law covers a rapidly developing field that is exponentially increasing its presence in both the public eye and on the list of desired classes for law students. In the past fifteen years, the number of animal law classes in American law schools has gone from less than ten to more than one hundred, and this casebook has been used as a model for courses internationally. Animal law is, in its simplest (and broadest) sense, a combination of statutory and decisional law in which the nature?-?legal, social, or biological?-?of non-human animals is an important factor. This new edition of Animal Law: Cases and Materials contains significant reorganization and updating while continuing to present a cohesive format that touches on many areas in which animals affect legal doctrines, caselaw, and legislative direction. Because animal law is not a traditional legal field, the book is largely framed according to traditional legal headings such as tort, contract, criminal, and constitutional law. Each chapter sets out cases and commentary where animal law is developing its own doctrine. In this fourth edition, the text has been updated and several chapters reorganized and revised to provide even greater clarity than in earlier editions. An important chapter on the commercial use of animals, introduced in the third edition, has been updated with more recent cases and statutory developments covering the significant areas of agriculture and biomedical research.
