Choosing To A Foster A Child Explored In Detail
I am the father of three children of my own and I have to admit that when I was younger I used to, at times, look forward to the day when they were all grown up and had fled the nest, so to speak. Just a couple of years ago my youngest child – my daughter called Amy – moved out of the family home to go and live with her long time boyfriend in London – at this stage I was aged forty-five. So has it all been as good and quiet as I had imagined it to be? Well the simple and short answer is NO; it has been much too quiet in fact! Then something quite amazing happened – my loving wife started to discuss the possibility of us fostering a young child…
Now again, when I was younger I would have stated that there would be no way in the world that I would ever foster a child – I had fathered three kids of my own, as previously pointed out, and these children were costing me an arm and a leg. But this again was when I was younger and it has to be said that as they were growing up I was hardly flush with money. Now in middle age I am a lot more successful and I ultimately have a lot more cash to my name. But it is not all about the money – I also have a lot of love to give to a child, as well as a lot of time and energy – plus the all important experience that I have gained, in the parenting stakes.
So for these reasons I quicky agreed to the idea and we therefore started looking into finding out further information.
And to fast forward to today – we are extremely happy to write that we are now the proud foster parents to a seven year old boy called Liam; he is a top kid who certainly keeps us on our toes and who is certainly keeping us young!

A New Literary History of America $19.49 America is a nation making itself up as it goes along—a story of discovery and invention unfolding in speeches and images, letters and poetry, unprecedented feats of scholarship and imagination. In these myriad, multiform, endlessly changing expressions of the American experience, the authors and editors of this volume find a new American history. In more than two hundred original essays, A New Literary History of America brings together the nation’s many voices. From the first conception of a New World in the sixteenth century to the latest re-envisioning of that world in cartoons, television, science fiction, and hip hop, the book gives us a new, kaleidoscopic view of what “Made in America” means. Literature, music, film, art, history, science, philosophy, political rhetoric—cultural creations of every kind appear in relation to each other, and to the time and place that give them shape. The meeting of minds is extraordinary as T. J. Clark writes on Jackson Pollock, Paul Muldoon on Carl Sandburg, Camille Paglia on Tennessee Williams, Sarah Vowell on Grant Wood’s American Gothic, Walter Mosley on hard-boiled detective fiction, Jonathan Lethem on Thomas Edison, Gerald Early on Tarzan, Bharati Mukherjee on The Scarlet Letter, Gish Jen on Catcher in the Rye, and Ishmael Reed on Huckleberry Finn. From Anne Bradstreet and John Winthrop to Philip Roth and Toni Morrison, from Alexander Graham Bell and Stephen Foster to Alcoholics Anonymous, Life, Chuck Berry, Alfred Hitchcock, and Ronald Reagan, this is America singing, celebrating itself, and becoming something altogether different, plural, singular, new. Please visit www.newliteraryhistory.com for more information. |

Abandoned Love $14.55 “She’s my mommy! Mine! You don’t have a mommy!” Delila Love was cruelly told when she was only four. After that bombshell, she lived in numerous foster homes where she never felt loved or wanted. Starving for love and affection, she began to believe in someone who kept professing his love to her daily, and the results almost ended up costing her her life, leaving her devastated and more insecure than ever. As a dedicated nurse, Delila never socialized or dated anyone. However, through pleading and coaxing by her only friend and roommate, Janet Green, she did agree to attend a party with her. Grant Sanders was instantly enchanted by Delila’s beauty. He thought that she was magnetic. She looked like an angel with her long wavy blonde hair, and she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. He just couldn’t take his eyes off her! In one glance, Grant’s beautiful big brown eyes captivated Delila. Realizing how head over heels in love she was with Grant, her insecurities emerged. How long before he’d betray her? |

Blood Atonement $6.99 Genealogist Nigel Barnes’s second case leads him into the dark heart of the Mormon church and a gruesome, century-old secret.Detective Chief Inspector Grant Foster is called to a homicide at the home of a single mother in Queens Park, London. Her throat has been cut from ear to ear and her body dumped in the garden. Her daughter and only child, Naomi, who has just turned fourteen that day, is missing. As the hours tick by, the feeling grows among Foster’s colleagues that this is most likely becoming a double-murder inquiry. With nothing in the present to indicate a motive, Foster decides to delve into the dead woman’s past only to find out she does not have one. He calls on genealogist Nigel Barnes. The trail takes Barnes back to late Victorian England where it abruptly ends with a young couple who came from the United States to England. Nigel’s quest takes him on trip through the violent history of the Mormon church as he and Foster race to solve a shameful, long-kept secret that is about to have bloody repercussions in the present, and for which someone is seeking vengeance.Dan Waddell delivers another gritty, suspenseful mystery that will keep readers guessing until the last page. |

Early U.S. Blackball Teams in Cuba: Box Scores, Rosters and Statistics from the Files of Cuba’s Foremost Baseball Researcher $35 Before they were the stars of the Negro Leagues—before the Negro Leagues even began—outstanding African American players like Rube Foster, Charles Grant and Pop Lloyd competed against the leading players of Cuba. In the early years of the 20th century, winners of the “colored” championship in the United States traveled to Cuba to compete against the top Cuban League teams, amateur clubs, and All-Star squads. Part of the “American Series” that brought teams from the major, minor, and Negro leagues to the island nation for more than six decades, these games are arguably the most important in a baseball relationship that was vital to the game’s history. Since the end of Cuban professional baseball in 1961, games like those of the American Series have become a distant memory. Scores and statistics are difficult to track down, and few could say who played in those long-ago contests. Fortunately, dedicated baseball historian Severo Nieto has spent a lifetime accumulating and preserving the facts and figures of Cuban baseball. Here he presents box scores, statistics, rosters, and summaries of the games, as well as biographical information for the players, of the American Series from 1900 through 1945. |

Effective Grading: A Tool for Learning and Assessment in College $40 The second edition of Effective Grading—the book that has become a classic in the field—provides a proven hands-on guide for evaluating student work and offers an in-depth examination of the link between teaching and grading. This second edition, especially with its extension into evaluating the learning goals of departments and general education programs, will make it even more valuable for everyone working to improve teaching and learning in higher education.”—L. Ghosts of the Confederacy $42.22 After Lee and Grant met at Appomatox Court House in 1865 to sign the document ending the long and bloody Civil War, the South at last had to face defeat as the dream of a Confederate nation melted into the Lost Cause. Through an examination of memoirs, personal papers, and postwar Confederaterituals such as memorial day observances, monument unveilings, and veterans’ reunions, Ghosts of the Confederacy probes into how white southerners adjusted to and interpreted their defeat and explores the cultural implications of a central event in American history. Foster argues that, contrary tosouthern folklore, southerners actually accepted their loss, rapidly embraced both reunion and a New South, and helped to foster sectional reconciliation and an emerging social order. He traces southerners’ fascination with the Lost Cause–showing that it was rooted as much in social tensionsresulting from rapid change as it was in the legacy of defeat–and demonstrates that the public celebration of the war helped to make the South a deferential and conservative society. Although the ghosts of the Confederacy still haunted the New South, Foster concludes that they did little to shapebehavior in it–white southerners, in celebrating the war, ultimately trivialized its memory, reduced its cultural power, and failed to derive any special wisdom from defeat. |

Globablizing City: Urban and Economic Transformation of Accra, Ghana $16.45 As urbanization of the world’s population grows at an ever-increasing pace, the need to understand the effects of globalization on cities is at the forefront of urban studies. Traditional scholarship largely employs a framework of analysis based on the globablizing experience of Western cities. In Globalizing City, Richard Grant draws on ten years of empirical research in Accra, Ghana’s capital city, to show how this African metropolis is as deeply transformed by globalization as the cities of other world regions.Grant reveals the ways in which international, transnational, and local forces are operating on the urban landscape of Accra, from elite gated communities to the poorest slums. Through interviews and extensive field work, he examines how foreign companies, returned expatriates, and native Ghanaians foster globalization on multiple levels. Globalizing City offers an excellent case study of the complex social and economic dynamics that have transformed Accra, providing an essential guide for studying globalizing cities in general. |

Intimate Strategies of the Civil War: Military Commanders and Their Wives $25 From Robert E. and Mary Lee to Ulysses S. and Julia Grant, Intimate Strategies of the Civil War examines the marriages of twelve prominent military commanders, highlighting the impact wives had on their famous husbands’ careers. Carol K. Bleser and Lesley J. Gordon assemble an impressive array of leading scholars to explore the marriages of six Confederate and six Union commanders. Contributors reveal that, for many of these men, the matrimonial bond was the most important relationship in their lives, one that shaped (and was shaped by) their military experience. In some cases, the commanders’ spouses proved relentless and skillful promoters of their husbands’ careers. Jessie Frémont drew on all of her connections as the daughter of former Senator Thomas Hart Benton to aid her modestly talented husband John. Others bolstered their military spouses in less direct ways. For example, Ulysses S. Grant’s relationship with Julia (a Southerner and former slave owner herself) kept him anchored in stormy times. Here, too, are tense and tempestuous pairings, such William Tecumseh Sherman and his wife Ellen–his foster sister before becoming his wife–and Jefferson Davis’s fascinatingly complex bond with Varina, further complicated by the hostile rumors about the two in Richmond society. Throughout, these historians paint remarkably intimate portraits of their subjects. Readers will see these famed men in a way that they perhaps never considered: not merely as famous leaders, but as lovers, husbands and fathers. |

Meeting the challenges of diversity: Beliefs of Taiwanese preservice early childhood teachers. $49.99 This study examines 797 Taiwanese pre-service early childhood teachers’ diversity beliefs using the Personal and Professional Beliefs about Diversity Scales (PPBD). The purposes of this study are to: (a) validate the diversity belief’s instrument, (b) investigate the relationship between diversity beliefs in both personal and professional contexts, (c) examine the group differences in diversity beliefs between pre-service teachers based on their demographic background, school characteristics, and cross-cultural experiences, (d) explore the influential determinants of diversity beliefs in the personal and professional contexts, and (f) identify the types of training early childhood pre-service teachers need regarding multicultural education in early childhood.;The results indicate that (a) the professional context of PPBD is not robust to use in population outside the U.S. and needed to modify by adding more items based on current diversity literature and the cultural context in Taiwan, (b) school characteristics are the major contributors that foster pre-service teachers’ diversity beliefs in both contexts, (c) school location is the most influential factor for the dependent variable of personal beliefs while experience of studying in another city and students’ major become the salient factors for the professional beliefs about diversity, (d) the type of educational philosophy is contributing factor of predicting diversity beliefs in both personal and professional contexts. It echoes the multicultural education approaches advocated by Sleeter and Grant (2003), which say that the most important component of multicultural education involves an entire school and touches all areas including students, teachers, staff, and administrators. |

He reached Knoxville on the 30th of December, and after spending two or three days with General Foster, came up to Strawberry Plains. The first intensity of the cold wave had passed by, but it was still “zero weather” when he came: indeed he had waited in Knoxville for a little moderating of the temperature, but finding that it continued |
