High End Ebook Readers for Frequent Readers   by Tyler Wells

Are you an avid reader? You have a burning desire to always have books handy, and consume them voraciously. Getting an Ebook reader can help satisfy your desires without constantly running to the library or book store. Choosing a portable Electronic book reader gives you the flexibility to take your collection of books anywhere you like.
Features of the Best Ebook Reader for an Avid Reader

When you start looking at E book readers you will discover they come in a wide range of sizes. You have the large 9″ Kindle with their great e-ink technology. With their high quality backlit display technology they may be the easiest Electronic book reader on the eyes, but they are somewhat large. If you really want an ultra-portable solution, you probably want to explore one of the smaller handheld ebook readers. Just because they are small does not make them hard to read. With their high quality electronic paper technology, they are very easy to read, and easy to carry.

The leader in both large and ultra-light portable devices are Amazon’s Kindle line-up. With over 350,000 different titles available, they can satisfy any avid reader. While handheld ebook readers were around before the Kindle, it changed the entire market. Suddenly someone with clout was pushing the publishers to start releasing more books in electronic ink, instead of just printed books. This has helped to bring power to the entire industry. Sony has taken on the challenge of the Amazon Kindle line, and produces a tremendous line of ebook readers, also

For an avid reader, one thing you must watch for is how many books it will hold. This will be dependent on the amount of memory pre-installed in the portable e-book reader. Also, check to make sure it can handle an additional memory card, so you can expand the memory and store even more books.

Think about the convenience of handheld ebook readers. When you are going on an extended vacation, instead of taking a bag full of books along, you just need to take the electronic book reader along with you, loaded up with books. Even if you happen to run out of books, you can electronically download new books and be ready to keep reading.

It is not only the convenience and portability, but also the cost of books which may impress you. Instead of waiting for New York Times bestsellers to be printed in paper back to save money, you can grab them in e book format, and save money. You won’t have to worry about storing the books on a shelf, and dusting them. You will not be worried about hauling them off years down the road, or putting them out at a garage sale for only a few pennies. You can keep the books indefinitely, and they take up virtually no room.

For an avid reader, it is time to move ahead with technology. You can enjoy the great satisfaction of reading anywhere with a high quality, portable electronic book reader. You will no longer be worried about finishing a book half-way through your lunch hour, and not having another book to start. You can carry a full library of books in only one hand.

Wish You Were Here (Audiophile Half Speed Mastered / Extended Range Recording)

Pink Floyd followed the commercial breakthrough of Dark Side of the Moon with Wish You Were Here, a loose concept album about and dedicated to their founding member Syd Barrett. The record unfolds gradually, as the jazzy textures of “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” reveal its melodic motif, and in its leisurely pace, the album shows itself to be a warmer record than its predecessor. Musically, it’s ar…

Used – The equivocal endings of these texts have occasioned a debate among critics and have led to both high praise and charges of ambivalence. In this study, the author begins by summarizing the century-long debate among James’s readers, looking particularly at the various schools of literary criticism – source studies, textual criticism, technical and structural approaches and new critical as well as post-new critical readings. ''Ask the Man Who Owns One'': An Illustrated History of Packard Advertising

”Ask the Man Who Owns One”: An Illustrated History of Packard Advertising

$49.95

A major force in the American automobile scene through the 1950s, Packard made a mark on American advertising as well. The cars themselves seemed built for promotion—the red hexagon in the hubcap, the yoke grille, and the half-arrow belt-line molding acted as a logo of sorts, setting a new standard in visual continuity and branding. The company’s image became so firmly established, in fact, that Packard eventually ran advertisements which pictured the cars but purposely omitted the name, instead asking readers to "guess what name it bears."This book traces Packard’s advertising history from 1900 through 1958, based on original research that includes several first-hand interviews with the people who made it happen. Filled with reproductions of Packard ads (some in color), the book looks beyond the surface to examine how the advertisements reflect and interpret the company’s management and business convictions, how they were influenced by business conditions and competitive pressure, and how they changed with the times.

1001 Stupid Sports Quotes: Jaw-Dropping, Stupefying, and Amazing Expressions from the World’s Best Athletes

$0.01

What is it about athletes and their amazing ability to twist and torture the English language? Here is an eminently readable, laugh-out-loud, always entertaining, can’t-put-it-down collection of 1001 of the must stupefyingly dumb quotes from the world’s best athletes. While they might be at the top of the athletic world, their profound inability to communicate clearly and articulately puts them on the bench. Here’s a small sampling: * New Orleans Saint RB George Rogers, when asked about the upcoming season: I want to rush for 1,000 or 1,500 yards, whichever comes first. * Shaquille O’Neal on whether he had visited the Parthenon during his visit to Greece: I can’t really remember the names of the clubs that we went to. * Pat Williams, Orlando Magic general manager, on his team’s 7-27 record in 1992: We can’t win at home. We can’t win on the road. I just can’t figure out where else to play. * Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez: Therapy can be a good thing; it can be therapeutic. * John Kruk: I’m not an athlete. I’m a professional baseball player. * Yogi Berra: Baseball is 90 percent mental–the other half is physical. Readers will want more, and 1001 Stupid Sports Quotes will provide hours of entertainment.

1812 is splendidly researched and finely written–a fiery tale of our country’s youth, of mighty passions, a half-for-gotten war, and incomparable men and women. David Nevin’s readers are blessed -Ralph Peters, author of Red Army A rich, robust historical novel of the kind we don’t get often enough. Famous men and women spring vividly to life–action abounds– 1812 is a great read – John Jakes The war of 1812 would either make America a global power sweeping all the way to the Pacific–or break it into small pieces bound to mighty England. It was a second revolution of sorts to prove to the British that America had to be taken seriously. The principal actors in this drama were James and Dolley Madison, and Andrew and Rachel Jackson. Their courage and determination would shape America’s destiny. It was a perilous and pivotal time for the young and not-entirely-United States, but it has been the most unremembered time in American history. Until now. The faded old etchings of battle on land and sea, of statesmen, heroes, villains (and their ladyloves), are now, in David Nevin’s 1812, brought to vivid life and color, tumultuous intensity, and you-are there immediacy. -Gary Jennings, New York Times bestselling author of Aztec Whatever we have gained by technology we have lost by ease. These people who lived in 1812 faced danger, adventure, and–no income tax! Read on. -Rita Mae Brown, author of Dolley

 A Century of Ambivalence

A Century of Ambivalence

$26.83

A century ago the Russian Empire contained the largest Jewish community in the world, numbering about five million people. Today, the Jewish population of the former Soviet Union has dwindled to half a million, but remains probably the world’s third largest Jewish community. In the intervening century the Jews of that area have been at the center of some of the most dramatic events of modern history — two world wars, revolutions, pogroms, political liberation, repression, and the collapse of the USSR. They have gone through tumultuous upward and downward economic and social mobility and experienced great enthusiasms and profound disappointments. In startling photographs from the archives of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research and with a lively and lucid narrative, A Century of Ambivalence traces the historical experience of Jews in Russia from a period of creativity and repression in the second half of the 19th century through the paradoxes posed by the post-Soviet era. This redesigned edition, which includes more than 200 photographs and two substantial new chapters on the fate of Jews and Judaism in the former Soviet Union, is ideal for general readers and classroom use.

 A Dangerous Profession

What is that compels novelists to be novelists? To brave obscurity, risk poverty, and endure countless uncompensated hour of labor? Award-winning author Frederick Busch explores his love affair with writing in a hybrid of essays which combines memoir with a heartfelt love of literature, as he looks at the hazards of the writing life, those who have lived it (Melville, Dickens, Hemingway, et al.) and the impact of their lives on their work.Frederick Busch has a voracious appetite for reading and writing great literature. In A Dangerous Profession, he explores his passion in a series of thoughtful, funny, insightful essays on his love affair with great books an the risky work required to produce them. The first section focuses on his own experiences as a writer — overcoming the financial uncertainty, finding a way to write in the only private space he could find (his bathroom), and growing to appreciate his family’s unwavering support. In the second half of the book, Busch broadens his scope, encompassing a profound group of writers who were driven to unravel the world in which they lived, in all of its complications and contradictions. He examines Dickens, Melville, Thoreau, Hemingway, Graham Green, and John O’Hara among others with an infectious enthusiasm for their books. His vibrant essays celebrate the writing life, inspiring his reader to reread (or read for the first time) classics which reflect the fine writing of the nineteenth and twentieth century. While it ranges in subject from an essay on his boyhood in Brooklyn to an essay on Hemingway’s sentence, this eclectic collection of essays is unified by Busch’s passionate, heartfelt desires to understand what makes writerswrite and to share his findings with his readers.

 A Glorious Defeat

Why Mexico Went To War With The United States The war that was fought between the United States and Mexico from 1846 to 1848 was a major event in the history of both countries: it cost Mexico half of its national territory, opened western North America to U.S. expansion, and brought to the surface a host of tensions that led to devastating civil wars in both countries. Among generations of Latin Americans, it helped to cement the image of the United States as an arrogant, aggressive, and imperialist nation, poisoning relations between a young America and its southern neighbors. In contrast with many current books that treat the war as a fundamentally American experience, Timothy J. Henderson offers a fresh perspective on the Mexican side of the equation. Examining the manner in which Mexico gained independence, Henderson brings to light a greater understanding of that country s intense factionalism and political paralysis leading up to and through the war. Also touching on a range of topics from culture, ethnicity, religion, and geography, this comprehensive yet concise narrative humanizes the conflict and serves as the perfect introduction for new readers of Mexican history.

Its clear, concise treatment and practical advice make this an ideal reference for all researchers and consultants.Authors Priscilla E. Greenwood and Mikhail S. Nikulin demonstrate the application of these general purpose tests in a wide variety of specific settings. They also Detail the various decisions to be made when applying Chi-squared tests to real data, and the proper application of these tests in standard hypothesis-testing situations Describe how Chi-squared type tests allow statisticians to construct a test statistic whose distribution is asymptotically Chi-squared, and to compute power against various alternatives Devote half of the book to examples of Chi-squared tests that can be easily adapted to situations not covered in the book Provide a self-contained, accessible treatment of the mathematical requisites Include an extensive bibliography and suggestions for further reading

The North, South, and West have all been exhausted; but from the East we have nothing but Southey’s unsaleables, and these he has contrived to spoil by adopting only their most outrageous fictions. His personages don’t interest us, and yours will. You will have no competitors; and, if you had, you ought to be glad of it. The little I have done in that way is merely a ‘ voice in the wilderness’ for you; and if it has had any success, that also will prove that the public are orientalizing, and pave the way for you.” There is something admirably business-like in this advice. Byron, who four months before had sold the ” Giaour ” and the ” Bride of Aby- dos” to Murray for a thousand guineas, was beginning to realize the commercial value ofpoetry; and, like a true man of affairs, knew what it meant to corner a poetic market. He was generous enough to give Moore the tip, and to hold out a helping hand as well; for he sent him six volumes of Castellan’s “Moeurs des Ottomans,” and three volumes of Toderini’s ” De la Litterature des Turcs.” The orientalism afforded by text-books was the kind that England loved. From the publication of “Lalla Bookh” in 1817 to the publication of Thackeray’s ” Our Street” in 1847, Byron’s far-sighted policy continued to bear golden fruit. Forthirty years Caliphs and Deevs, Brahmins and Circassians, rioted through English verse; mosques and seraglios were the stage properties of English fiction; the bowers of Rochnabed, the Lake of Cashmere, became as familiar as Richmond and the Thames to English readers. A Historical Commentary on Thucydides

A Historical Commentary on Thucydides

$34.3

Much of the modern way of thinking about history and historiography in fact begins with the great Greek historian Thucydides, an Athenian general in the latter half of the fifth century b.c.e. It is also Thucydides who provides us with the historical framework for fifth-century Greece, a period of progress and creativity rarely equaled in human history. His work, The Peloponnesian War, recounts that destructive conflict and also includes the only surviving contemporary record of the rise of the Athenian empire. Thucydides teaches his readers that the most powerful states in the world can come to a humiliating end, that a careless tyranny, especially toward the weak, and, nearly two millennia before Machiavelli, that absolute power corrupts absolutely. In A Historical Commentary on Thucydides, David Cartwright aims to guide the Greekless reader through Thucydides’ fascinating yet demanding narrative. Cartwright’s is the only such full-length, one-volume commentary and companion: it is based on Rex Warner’s Penguin translation of Thucydides–the most widely used translation–and requires no knowledge of Greek. The introduction to A Historical Commentary on Thucydides includes a brief biography of Thucydides: his approach, aims, and methods are discussed, as are the general character of his work and his contribution to historiography. The commentary gives brief accounts of the people and places mentioned by Thucydides and puts events in their immediate and wider contexts. Cartwright provides occasional summaries, explains Greek concepts and technical terms, and offers interpretations of difficult or controversial passages. The author also picks out important historiographical issuesand discusses the themes’ underlying events. For both first-time readers and seasoned students, this commentary gives broad access to one of antiquity’s most profound and difficult writers. Historians, classicists, and anyone else interested in the cultural and intellectual achievem

 A Long December

A Long December

$146.06

A Long December: American crime fiction’s best-kept secret-as if Michael Connelly had spent twenty-six years as a small-town cop in Iowa-has written his breakout book. Brief Description: The people of Nation County, Iowa-a heartland town straight out of a Coen Brothers movie or a John Cougar Mellencamp song-practice a unique brand of American stoicism. You betcha. And they rely upon their public servants to shield them from the horrors of the outside world. Carl Houseman, deputy sheriff of the 750-square-mile county, dedicates his life to keeping his citizenry so secure that you can leave the door unlocked at home and walk his streets with a big hello and a smile to every stranger. On Houseman’s watch, the mounting terrors of the new world order stay far away. But December 2001 could change all of that. Outsiders are everywhere. The meat plant is now kosher and there are more Jewish fellows per capita than any other place in the country. Hispanic and other foreign workers, with dubious immigration papers, have taken jobs from the locals. Eighteen other languages are now spoken within the tiny region, and Carl and company can’t speak a single one. Then the eighty-odd-year-old Heinman brothers’ call comes in from their farm down in Frog Hollow. They’ve witnessed an execution-style killing not one hundred yards from their pig feeders. The victim’s awful dead and half his head’s been blown off. The boys haven’t seen nothing like it since Normandy. When Carl gets to the scene, he believes them. What follows is a masterful police procedural thriller-think Joe Wambaugh crossed withFargo-written with a singular and authentic voice that has electrified readers around the world.

A Nation of Laws: America's Imperfect Pursuit of Justice

A Nation of Laws: America’s Imperfect Pursuit of Justice

$1.99

America’s founders extolled a nation of laws, for they knew that only a fairly enforced legal system could protect liberty and property against corruption and tyranny. Nearly two and a half centuries later, that system remains the ultimate safeguard for us all. With concise but penetrating and provocative insights, the eminent Peter Charles Hoffer recaptures the spirit of this grand enterprise while never losing sight of its human face. The distillation of four decades of stellar writing, Hoffer’s book is a wise and illuminating meditation on the key concepts, history, evolution, and importance of American law. He brings the law to life through brief narratives and portraits drawn from the pages of our nation’s history. He takes his readers on a tumultuous journey from the Salem witchcraft trials through the divisive debates over slavery; the long struggles for equality and civil rights; the moral and culture wars over abortion, gay rights, and the teaching of evolution; and recent controversies concerning the rule of law in wartime. In a very compact space, Hoffer has a great deal to say about the role of law, lawmakers, law cases, lawyers, litigants, judges, law professors, and public opinion in creating and recreating the fabric that weaves all of these elements together. He pays particular attention to the criminal trial by looking at the legal proceedings against slave liberator John Brown, feminist Susan B. Anthony, and teacher of evolution John Scopes. He also explores what happens when the law is stretched to the breaking point by revisiting such events as the Stono Slave Rebellion, the Seneca Falls women’s rights convention, and FDR’s paradigm-shifting New Deal speech.Throughout, Hoffer carefully weighs the promise and vitality of our laws against its flaws and historical failures, for our legal system has not reflected a strong linear progress from inequality and privilege toward perfected liberty and dignity for all. His crystal clear vision of

A People’s History of the American Revolution: How Common People Shaped the Fight for Independence

$25.95

Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States turned history on its head for an entire generation of readers, telling the nation’s story through the eyes of ordinary people—the slaves, workers, immigrants, women, and Native Americans who made history but who are typically left out of the historical record. In the two decades since its first publication, A People’s History of the United States has been a revelation to thousands of Americans (it has sold over a half-million copies in the US alone), for whom Zinn’s bottom-up approach afforded new and critical vantage points on the American past. Now, under the direction of Howard Zinn, The New Press introduces a groundbreaking new series of original people’s histories. Examining major events and eras in US as well as world history with the same critical lens that Zinn used for the whole of American history, The New Press People’s Histories reinterpret the past for a new generation of readers. The first book in the series, Ray Raphael’s A People’s History of the American Revolution: How Common People Shaped the Fight for Independence, is a provocative retelling of America’s founding moment. As Zinn writes, “I can’t think of a better way to launch the People’s History series than with Ray Raphael’s book on the American Revolution. He’s done a superb job of research in both secondary and primary material. The book is rich with wonderful quotations from first-hand sources. His point of view, his narrative, perfectly match the intent of a ‘people’s history.’ ” The first major effort to tell the history of the American Revolution from the often overlooked standpoints of itseveryday participants, A People’s History of the American Revolution is a highly accessible narrative of the wartime experience that brings in the stories of previously marginalized voices: the common people, slave and free, who made up the majority in eighteenth-century

 A Place in Space

A Place in Space

$14.95

In this classic collection of 29 pieces that span half a century, Gary Snyder explores humans’ complex, ever-evolving attitudes toward the environment. He argues that nature is not separate from humanity, but intrinsic to it, and that since societies are natural constructs, it’s imperative to go beyond racial, ethnic, and religious identities to find a shared concern for acts that benefit humans and nonhumans alike. Included in the collection is his 1971 environmental manifesto Four Changes, which, as he writes in a postscript, is unfortunately truer than ever. In this new edition, Snyder sends out a call-to-action that challenges all beings to take moral responsibility, a call that resounds with readers discovering the book for the first time or those returning to an old favorite.

A Queen’s Move [A Swithin Spin]

$5.99

Tressa, the Swithin Queen, doesn’t always manage to act as a lady should. Her marriage is one of duty, though not without love. Even so, Markis, her husband, is happy for her to try a softer, feminine touch, if it means that Tressa finally finds true love. Meira is half Swithin and even though she’s a great healer, some look upon her heritage with suspicion. Still, she’s stronger than that; what others think of her has never mattered…so why is it suddenly important to her that Tressa looks at her with love? Why does she want to protect Tressa even if it means possibly failing to do the right thing? Will the nation be able to stand up to the two women? Even more importantly, how will Tressa and Meira manage their dominant natures between the sheets? Publisher’s Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: Anal play, exhibitionism, fisting, homoerotic sexual practices (f/f), voyeurism.

In 1775 Congress endorsed a plan to invade Canada at Quebec. Command was given to Benedict Arnold and notable among his troops were three companies of men well accustomed to the wilderness of the Eastern Woodlands-the renowned riflemen under Captain Daniel Morgan, the famous pioneer and frontiersman. One of their number was the author of this riveting account. Henry, with five companions, under Lieutenant Steele were specially selected to scout ahead and break the trail for the following army. The small party set off in birch-bark canoes and what followed makes for a classic account of soldiering through a hostile land, ever in fear of ambush by hostile Indians and struggling to overcome and to subsist in the harsh terrain. Henry barely survived the ordeal and yet these events were merely the beginnings of his experiences. Readers who are fascinated by the adventures of early colonial backwoodsmen will find much to interest them in this book. The attack on Quebec was a ragged affair with both Arnold and Morgan wounded in street fighting. Local militia decided the issue and the assault was ultimately a failure with over half the American army forced to surrender. Previously published as ‘The Campaign Against Quebec,’ this Leonaur edition has been re-titled so that modern readers will readily understand its content; it is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
