Top Picks in Leather Shoes by Denise Atwood
I’m sure all of us have had a pair of leather shoes in our lifetime’which is why leather shoes are a must-have in any woman’s wardrobe. There are tons of fabulous designs out there in the market that any woman can appreciate. So here are my top picks in leather shoes.
1. Athletic Shoes: Pastry Glam Pie Sneakers
The Pastry sneaker line, by Vanessa and Angela Simmons, is definitely a fierce line of athletic shoes for women. Personally, I’m ecstatic that there is finally a line of girly athletic footwear. That’s why the Glam Pie hi-top sneaker for $50 is my pick for best leather sneaker. It comes in a variety of adorable color combinations like brown and baby blue or pink and purple. But what I love most about this leather sneaker is its eyelet leather panel that’s displayed on the sides of the shoe; which is something rarely seen in sneaker designs. Also its retro 80′s hi-top look makes it feel young and hip.
2. Boots: Pour La Victoire Jeana Patent Granny Boot
Remember the story about the old woman who lived in a shoe? Well, this Pour La Victoire Jeana leather boot reminds me of that’only much chicer. These beautiful granny boots with yellow patent leather is an awesome choice for any fashion risk-taker. With its lace-ups and high heels’not to mention its fabulous color’this boot definitely has a 60′s mod look to it. So for those women looking for a fabulous and unique leather boot, look no further, because these boots are the perfect choice.
3. Pumps: Miss Sixty Jess Peep Toe Pump
Everybody always go back to the basics. And the Miss Sixty Jess Pump is definitely a classic staple that every woman should have. From the boardroom to the club, a good pair of black leather peep toe pumps always deliver. These particular leather pumps are great because of its simple design, playful peep toe and ultra high heel. Plus with a price tag of only $70, who wouldn’t want these shoes?
4. High Heel Sandals: Balmain Giuseppe Zanotti for Balmain Gladiator Sandals
From the runways to the soles of the hottest celebrities, we all know that an ultra high, ultra sexy, pair of gladiator sandals are in. But these fierce Balmain Gladiator Sandals’take the cake. Costing at a whopping $1,200, I doubt that the average Joe (or in this case Joanne) could afford this hot leather shoe’but a girl can dream. The sandal comes in unique pebbled leather, a sexy 4-inch stiletto, dozen of straps that come up to your calves, and edgy silver studs that are meticulously placed throughout the sandal. With all this going on in one shoe, what isn’t there to love?
5. Flat Sandals: Pour La Victoire Ella Sandal
here are a lot of flat sandals in the stores, but I have to say the Ella Sandal by Pour La Victoire ranks up there on the top of my list. These leather sandals (which come in an adorable pink snakeskin print), definitely combines soft’almost romantic designs’with hard material elements. One of the most striking features has to be the beautifully constructed leather ruffle with zipper trim, adhered on the top of the sandal. Although it might be pricey for some at $215, it is still a great pick for summer.
Leather shoes are always a staple in any woman’s closet. So, if you don’t have a leather sandal or a pair of leather pumps, what are you waiting for?

A Life in Secrets: Vera Atkins and the Missing Agents of WWII $17 Once rumored to have been the inspiration for Ian Fleming’s Miss Moneypenny, Vera Atkins climbed her way to the top in the Special Operations Executive, or SOE: Britain’s secret service created to help build up, organize, and arm the resistance in the Nazi-occupied countries. Throughout the war, Atkins recruited, trained, and mentored the agents for the SOE’s French Section, which sent more than four hundred young men and women into occupied France—at least one hundred of whom never returned and were reported “Missing Presumed Dead” after the war. Twelve of these were women and among Atkins’s most cherished spies. When the war ended in 1945, she made it her personal mission to find out what happened to them and the other agents lost behind enemy lines, tracing rigorously their horrific final journeys. But as the woman who carried out this astonishing search appeared quintessentially English, Atkins was nothing of the sort. As we follow her through the devastation of postwar Germany, we learn Atkins herself covered her life in mystery so that even her closest family knew almost nothing of her past. In A Life in Secrets Sarah Helm has stripped away Vera Atkins’s many veils. Drawing on recently released sixty-year-old government files and her unprecedented access to the private papers of the Atkins family, Helm vividly reconstructs a complex and extraordinary life. |

Agatha Christie’s Secret Notebooks: Fifty Years of Mysteries in the Making $25.99 A fascinating exploration of the contents of Agatha Christie’s seventy-three private notebooks, including illustrations and two unpublished Poirot stories When Agatha Christie died in 1976, at age eighty-five, she had become the world’s most popular author. With sales of more than two billion copies worldwide, in more than one hundred countries, she had achieved the impossible—more than one book every year since the 1920s, every one a bestseller. So prolific was Agatha Christie’s output—sixty-six crime novels, twenty plays, six romance novels under a pseudonym and more than one hundred and fifty short stories—it was often claimed that she had a photographic memory. Was this true? Or did she resort over those fifty-five years to more mundane methods of working out her ingenious crimes? Following the death of Agatha’s daughter, Rosalind, at the end of 2004, a remarkable legacy was revealed. Unearthed among her affairs at the family home of Greenway were Agatha Christie’s private notebooks, seventy-three handwritten volumes of notes, lists and drafts outlining all her plans for her many books, plays and stories. Buried in this treasure trove, all in her unmistakable handwriting, are revelations about her famous books that will fascinate anyone who has ever read or watched an Agatha Christie story. How did the infamous twist in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd really come about? Which very famous Poirot novel started life as an adventure for Miss Marple? Which books were designed to have completely differ-ent endings, and what were they? What were the plot ideas that she considered but rejected? Full of details she was too modest to reveal in her own autobiography, this remarkable new book includes a wealth of excerpts and pages reproduced directly from the notebooks and her letters, plus, for the first time, two newly discovered complete Hercule Poirot short stories never before published |

Devil’s Ford $31.95 Bret Harte is a fondly remembered western writer who spent only eighteen of his sixty-six years in the American west — in fact, he went on, in 1878, to get work as an American consul in Germany, and as far as we can tell, never came back to the United States. He died in 1902, and was buried in the churchyard of St. Peter’s Church, in Frimley, Surrey, England.Even so, the American west was in his heart, and that was what he wrote about — as he does here, in Devil’s Ford, a novel set in Harte’s California, which it speaks to preposterousness in a very Bret-Hartelike way: Kearney, it’s decided, will furnish water brought from the Union Ditch, twenty miles away, at a cost of two hundred thousand dollars, to feed a memorial fountain erected by Mattingly, worth a hundred thousand dollars, as a crowning finish to public buildings contributed by Maryland Joe, to the extent of half a million more. The disposition of these vast sums by gentlemen wearing patched breeches awakened no sense of the ludicrous, nor did any doubt, reservation, or contingency enter into the plans of the charming enthusiasts themselves. The foundation of their airy castles lay already before them in the strip of rich alluvium on the riverbank, where the North Fork, sharply curving round the base of Devil’s Spur, had for centuries swept the detritus of gulch and canyon. Like all of Bret Harte’s work, this novel is fun stuff. Don’t miss it. |

Dinner at Miss Lady’s: Memories and Recipes from a Southern Childhood $0.81 Imagine a place where talking to anyone in your extended family doesn’t mean getting on the phone. Imagine a dinner that you can smell cooking for hours on end all through the house, with the good vegetables from the garden that week, the chicken from the local grocer, the peach ice cream– because the peaches are in season and are ripe and full of juice. Imagine fresh biscuits for breakfast and fresh-baked rolls with dinner. A world like this sounds faraway, or even like it never existed. But it did exist, thank goodness. Dinner at Miss Lady’s is a touching, vivid memoir of one family growing up in Georgia that brings us back to this nearly lost, slower-paced time, a time when every meal brought the whole family together. Structured around the significant meals that took place in her grandmother Miss Lady’s house, Luann Landon tells us the funny, bittersweet, touching stories of her tightly knit, slightly eccentric, occasionally confrontational family. And to further bring each of the meals into focus, Landon provides us with the wonderfully rich, extravagant menus for those memorable midday dinners and celebratory suppers, along with over sixty precise recipes for creating each of them. Dinner at Miss Lady’s speaks not only to the people who were raised in this world, but to all the rest of us who wish we had been raised there. This maybe a life we’ll never return to. But we can, every once in a while, go there, just for an hour- or two. |

She has returned with the intention of holding a huge party in order to be able to die happy. Maybe it’s that familiar smell, or her own unbridled imagination, or the letters from her sister Magdalena, or the years that gave gone by, that grant her the power of bringing back the dead, especially those who have succumbed to the kiss of the enigmatic Vladimir the Cossack. Slowly, the house fills up with the lineage of the Medina. No one will miss this party, not even the longed-for but deadly Vladimir. |

From Sand Hill To Pine $36.94 Bret Harte is a fondly remembered western writer who spent only eighteen of his sixty-six years in the American west — in fact, he went on, in 1878, to get work as an American consul in Germany, and as far as we can tell, never came back to the United States. He died in 1902, and was buried in the churchyard of St. Peter’s Church, in Frimley, Surrey, England.Even so, the American west was in his heart, and that was what he wrote about — here, in From Sand Hill to Pine, including stories like “A Niece of Snapshot Harry’s,” “A Treasure of the Redwoods,” “A Belle of Canada City,” “What Happened at the Fonda,” “A Jack and Jill of the Sierras,” and “Mr. Bilson’s Housekeeper.” Harte was a wonderful writer; this is a volume you won’t want to miss. |

Life in Secrets: Vera Atkins and the Missing Agents of WWII $13.99 Once rumored to have been the inspiration for Ian Fleming’s Miss Moneypenny, Vera Atkins climbed her way to the top in the Special Operations Executive, or SOE: Britain’s secret service created to help build up, organize, and arm the resistance in the Nazi-occupied countries. |

Lights Out: A Story of Love and Hate Between Two Worlds $30.75 All what Tiffany wanted out of life was freedom, but couldn’t get her wish unless she did a couple of things. Tiffany Bloom was convicted and sentenced to sixty years to life in prison. She has been locked away for over twenty years and now has decided to tell her side of what really happened during her childhood days that caused her to murder a couple of people she was once close to. Everything was quiet ever since the murders. The police still didn’t have any leads on who committed such actions. I had their blood all over me. If I could get away with one murder, can I possibly get away with other murders? It’s not so bad here. I actually see myself living here for a pretty long time, considering I have been here for over twenty years. One thing that I miss the most is being part of a family that once existed. |
