Does anyone know how much my rare newspapers might be?
I’m going to have it appraised eventually, I just wanted to see if I could just get someone to give an educated guess as to it how much it might be worth. (i don’t have a clue) The item is a very large frame with UV-protected glass, with two newspapers framed side-by-side: (Left) The original 1861 New York Herald that announced that Abraham Lincoln was elected president, (Right) the recent New York times of the official announcement that Obama was elected. I know the papers individually might not be worth that much, but I think the Lincoln/Obama match is very nice. Also, without having to guess, would anyone be able to recommend a very trustworthy appraisal service I could use?
As a longtime newspaper collector, I would say you could probably find a buyer for this because of its historic value. There is no standard, unfortunately, to determine the worth of old newspapers. It’s not like stamps or coins, which have catalogues that set fair prices based on recent sales.
So, price it for whatever you think you could get.
The question I would have is this: How do you know the 1861 newspaper is an original? There have, unfortunately, be a lot of reprints of this, and very many other ‘historic’ newspapers. So you will need to have a reputable dealer look at it. There are some who advertise on the Internet.
