MIT hosts Math Prize for Girls (MIT)

On a beautiful, bright blue Saturday morning, as students soaked up the sun on
lawns across campus, 276 girls from middle schools and high schools across the
United States and Canada sat in buildings 4 and 10, puzzling over a set of
complex math problems.

The students came to compete in the Advantage Testing Foundation’s Math Prize
for Girls, hosted this year by MIT. The competition, now in its third year,
offers the world’s largest math prize for girls: First place carries a reward
of $25,000, with another $23,000 divided among the remaining top 10 finalists.

The prize money is certainly a draw for participants, some of whom have
traveled thousands of miles for the chance to compete. For many others, like
this year’s first-place winner, Victoria Xia, the competition is also a chance
to be part of a community that they wouldn’t normally find at home.

“If you look at our math team in school, the vast majority are guys,” says
Xia, a high school sophomore from Vienna, Va. “It’s nice to have events like
this to promote more women in the field.”

MIT President Susan Hockfield echoed Xia’s thoughts in welcoming the
competitors to …

$0.99

Young Martin’s grandfather was once a world explorer, and now he has given Martin a key that opens the door to his secret storeroom. That’s where Grandpa keeps a very special travel album and a magic necklace that can transport Martin to different faraway places. On Martin’s arrival in each country, he is greeted by friendly hosts who show him important places to visit, introduce him to the local culture, and teach him several simple phrases in the country’s language. The color-illustrated books in the 1, 2, 3 series offer kids fascinating reading experiences while also introducing them to different people and cultures around the world. In this book, Martin visits Mayan ruins in Teotihuacan, climbs the Pyramid of the Sun, and sees the Temple of the Feathered Serpent. In modern Mexico City, he watches a parade in which the men dress in fantastic animal costumes, and then he rides a boat through canals decorated with floating gardens that were originally created by the Aztecs. He also learns about the Day of the Dead celebration and visits a rain forest, where ancient Mayan ruins stand amid luxuriant tropical surroundings. Companion volumes to this fascinating book take Martin on exciting journeys to several other countries.

The Minister Commences By Reading One Of The Following Sentences Of Scripture. [It is recommended that the Congregation rise at the commencement of the Religious Exercises, and remain standing until the close of the Exhortation ; also, that they Kneel in time of Prayer, and Stand, facing the pulpit, in time of Singing.] Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous; but the way of the ungodly shall perish. Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust do corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life he that cometh to me shall never hunger ; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. All that the Father giveth me shall come unto me ; and him that cometh unto me, I will in no wise cast out. Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one cometh unto the Father but by me. From the rising of the sun to the going down thereof, the Lord’s name is to be praised. O, give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endureth forever. Exhortation. My brethren, the goodness of Almighty God has thus far conducted us, and we arehere, the living monuments of his mercy. Our day of probation is yet prolonged, and if he will give us strength, we shall yet come off more than conquerors, through him that loved us. But our work is not accomplished. Toil, trial, and suffering, still await …

A Place in the Sun?: Women Writers in Twentieth-Century Cuba

A Place in the Sun?: Women Writers in Twentieth-Century Cuba

$73.59

Women have published a rich and varied selection of work in Cuba throughout the twentieth century. Their writings give us a crucial insight into the recent history of that country. In this book, Catherine Davies develops a sophisticated and theoretically informed feminist reading of works by authors such as Dulce Mar a Loynaz and the poet Fina Garc a Marruz who developed their styles in the pre-Revolutionary period and black and mulatto poets such as Nancy Morej n, Georgina Herrera and Excilia Salda a from the post-1959 socialist era. The author reads these key texts in ways that show how women s writing can open up areas that resist alignment into the grand narratives –of liberalism, Marxism–that have usually dominated interpretations of Cuban culture. This is a major theoretical intervention into debates around representation.

A Trouble of Fools (Carlotta Carlyle Series #1)

$0.01

The first book in the Carlotta Carlyle series!Linda Barnes’s A Trouble of Fools is the book that introduced readers to ex-Boston cop and PI Carlotta Carlyle, who knows trouble when she sees it like the old Irish lady offering a grand in cash to find her brother…TROUBLE…Since being bounced from the Boston police for insubordination after six years of service, Carlotta Carlyle has set up shop as a private investigator ready to deal with anything from lost pets to substantially grander larcenies. Though Carlotta, a six-foot-tall, redheaded ex cop, part-time cabbie, and neophyte private eye, works out of her home, it’s rare that clients stop by unannounced. Especially clients like the genteel, reserved, elderly spinster Miss Margaret Devens. ALWAYS COMES…With cash flow problems and a caseload so light that she’s taken to reading her cat’s mail, Carlotta accepts the case of Miss Devens’s missing brother Eugene. Oddly enough, Carlotta knew Eugene when they worked together back at Green and White Cab. As far as Carlotta sees it, this case should be a pinch—until two thugs looking for money send her client to the hospital. WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT…The old lady’s missing brother seems to have been involved in something much more dangerous than simply driving a cab. Carlotta is determined to do whatever it takes-work the cops, pose as a hooker, and even drive a cab again—to find Eugene before it’s too late.”She is one of the most sparkling, most irresistible heroines ever to grace the pages of a whodunit.”?Chicago Sun-Times”All elements are skillfully woven together in a book that has just about everything.”—Denver Post

Much of the inspiration that aroused the zeal of the authors came from exaggerations composed of tradition and misstatements called history. I speak now of what preceded the exodus from England. There is nothing that excites so vehemently the sympathies of civilized men as the narrative of physical agony, mental anguish and spiritual suffering that a person or a people undergoes on account of religious faith. There is witchery in the dim past, just as there is in the natural world, that magnifies objects seen through haze. The sun appears more than twice as large at the horizon than at its zenith. Time has magnified women of ordinary statute into Amazons; has increased the glory of Galahad; multiplied the army of Xerxes; made marvelous, not to say enviable, the gastronomic capacity of the Romans, and, even later, of our English ancestry, and the physical strength of the Greeks. $49.99

This is a first-rate introductory book that takes a practical approach to solving problems using C++. It covers a much wider scope of C++ programming than other introductory books I’ve seen, and in a surprisingly compact format. –Dag Bruck, founding member of the ANSI/ISO C++ committee The authors present a clear, cogent introduction to C++ programming in a way that gets the student writing nontrivial programs immediately. –Stephen Clamage, Sun Microsystems, Inc., and chair of the ANSI C++ committee Anyone reading just this one book and working through the examples and exercises will have the same skills as many professional programmers. –Jeffrey D. Oldham, Stanford University Why is Accelerated C++ so effective? Because it Starts with the most useful concepts rather than the most primitive ones: You can begin writing programs immediately. Describes real problems and solutions, not just language features: You see not only what each feature is, but also how to use it. Covers the language and standard library together: You can use the library right from the start. The authors proved this approach in their professional-education course at Stanford University, where students learned how to write substantial programs on their first day in the classroom. Whether you are eager to get started writing your first C++ programs, or you are already using C++ and seeking deeper understanding, the authors’ unique approach and expertise make Accelerated C++ an indispensable addition to your library. 020170353XB04062001

Age of Everything: How Science Explores the Past

Age of Everything: How Science Explores the Past

$5.1

Taking advantage of recent advances throughout the sciences, Matthew Hedman brings the distant past closer to us than it has ever been. Here, he shows how scientists have determined the age of everything from the colonization of the New World over 13,000 years ago to the origin of the universe nearly fourteen billion years ago.Hedman details, for example, how interdisciplinary studies of the Great Pyramids of Egypt can determine exactly when and how these incredible structures were built. He shows how the remains of humble trees can illuminate how the surface of the sun has changed over the past ten millennia. And he also explores how the origins of the earth, solar system, and universe are being discerned with help from rocks that fall from the sky, the light from distant stars, and even the static seen on television sets.Covering a wide range of time scales, from the Big Bang to human history, The Age of Everything is a provocative and far-ranging look at how science has determined the age of everything from modern mammals to the oldest stars, and will be indispensable for all armchair time travelers. “We are used to being told confidently of an enormous, measurable past: that some collection of dusty bones is tens of thousands of years old, or that astronomical bodies have an age of some billions. But how exactly do scientists come to know these things? That is the subject of this quite fascinating book. . . . As told by Hedman, an astronomer, each story is a marvel of compressed exegesis that takes into account some of the most modern and intriguing hypotheses.”—Steven Poole, Guardian  “Hedman is worth reading because he is careful to present both the power and peril of trying to extract precise chronological data. These are all very active areas of study, and as you read Hedman you begin to see how researchers have to be both very careful and incredibly audacious, and how

 America's Mom

America’s Mom

$3.01

For two generations of Americans, reading Ann Landers’s daily column was as important as eating breakfast. For nearly fifty years an entire nation turned to this quick-witted, worldly-wise counselor for advice on everything from dinner etiquette to sex. But who was the woman behind the byline? Iowa-born Eppie Lederer was first hired by the Chicago Sun-Times to take over the daily advice column in 1955 — and over the next half-century she helped shape the nation’s social and sexual landscape. Award-winning journalist Rick Kogan was Ann Landers’s last editor and close friend, and he paints a fascinating, full-bodied account of the triumphs, the wisdom, the courage, and the trials of one of the twentieth century’s most enduring icons — including her painful lifelong feud with her identical twin sister, Dear Abby ; her stubborn refusal to shy away from even the most controversial topics; and the tragic breakup of her own thirty-six-year marriage. Filled with remarkable stories shared by people from all walks of life who were profoundly affected by the good sense and guidance of Ann Landers, America’s Mom is a moving tribute to a singular woman who has earned an eternal place in our culture … and our hearts.

 An Unfinished Republic

An Unfinished Republic

$67.1

In this cogent and insightful reading of China”s twentieth-century political culture, David Strand argues that the Chinese Revolution of 1911 engendered a new political life–one that began to free men and women from the inequality and hierarchy that formed the spine of China”s social and cultural order. Chinese citizens confronted their leaders and each other face-to-face in a stance familiar to republics worldwide. This shift in political posture was accompanied by considerable trepidation as well as excitement. Profiling three prominent political actors of the time–suffragist Tang Qunying, diplomat Lu Zhengxiang, and revolutionary Sun Yatsen–Strand demonstrates how a sea change in political performance left leaders dependent on popular support and citizens enmeshed in a political process productive of both authority and dissent.

When you do, you are the most magnificent lighthouse and even though the storm around you surges and the wind is blowing, your light is making all the difference to those who are seeking. You are in the midst of a change of energy and it is intensifying. You are coming into a new energy. It is the energy that is marked by your year of 2012. It is the energy of change for the entire planetary consciousness and all of you will have to adjust to the new tune. The tune that is being introduced to you is the one of unity consciousness. It is the tune that delivers to you the frequency of the “New Sun.” It is your time to choose as all of you will face the dilemma of light or dark; separation or unity. We are your messengers reminding you of what you already know. We are here to remind you that you are indeed loved, that you are family, and to remind you that there is never a judgment on how far you reach. You are light and you are eternal. We wish you to realize that everything you see around you was created for you so you can move to where you are standing now. We wish you to take one more step forward so you can remember who you are and remind others who they are. We wish you to know that you are a part of God, and so be it.Comments from readers: “I’ve been profoundly touched and influenced by these messages. This book has changed my life.” -M. D. Aryan Race

Aryan Race

$11.2

This general Aryan superiority is indicative of a highly active and capable intellect, even though no one mind exercised a controlling influence. The general mentality of the race, the gross sum of Aryan thought and judgment, must have guided the course of Aryan evolution and kept our forefathers from those side-pits of stagnation into which all their competitors fell. During its primitive era the Aryan race moved steadily forward unto a well-devised system of organization which formed the basis of the great development of modern times.-from “The Age of Philosophy”What began in the late 19th century as a startlingly inept work of wishful thinking, outrageous conjecture, and bald racism masquerading as scholarship transformed itself, in the late 20th century, into a foundational work of neo-Nazi philosophy. Positing an heretofore-and subsequently-entirely unknown culture of Indo-Europeans as the standard bearers of all human progress and initiative, this 1888 work strings together a portrait of the “Aryan race” from carefully chosen scraps of religious, political, and social systems from across the Old World into a house of historical cards.Useless as a guide to human cultural origins, The Aryan Race is nevertheless essential reading for anyone hoping to understand the modern subculture of white supremacists, and how they come by their extreme doctrines.CHARLES MORRIS (1833-1922) also wrote A Manual of Classical Literature, Aryan Sun-Myths: The Origin of Religion, Heroes of Discovery in America, and The San Francisco Calamity.

Bone Deep in Landscape: Writing, Reading and Place

Bone Deep in Landscape: Writing, Reading and Place

$1.99

Great-granddaughter of homesteaders in north-central Montana, Mary Clearman Blew grew up in one of the last vestiges of the rural frontier. Her girlhood chores–hauling water and rounding up cattle–were remote even to her town-bred classmates in the forties and fifties. It was a girlhood she now recalls realistically, with affection but without nostalgia. Many others have written about this land, its people, and its history, and Blew examines portrayals of the West in some of their writing, including B. M. Bower’s CHIPS OF THE FLYING U and the novels of Dorothy M. Johnson and A. B. Guthrie, Jr. Always her discussions are permeated with landscape and memory. Her essays interlock nature writing, autobiography, literary criticism, and history in a collection that reflects a woman’s life in the Rocky Mountain West. Blew immerses readers in a landscape of mountains and prairies, blizzards and scorching sun, and in a regional history in which Indians lose the landscape to white settlers, who find the living tough. BONE DEEP IN LANDSCAPE demonstrates Mary Clearman Blew’s commitments to place as a source of knowing and to living consciously–as writer, mother, scholar, and western woman. “Her precision of language allows the reader to feel the shimmer of the prairie near Havre, MT, or a bone-cold visit to a new home in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. . . . While each essay stands alone, they combine to create a complementary whole that sets a standard for nonfiction writing.”–Library Journal “Blew again demonstrates her artistry and strong connection to the Western terrain of her past and present homes in Montana and Idaho. . . . This is an immensely enjoyable collection.”–Publishers Weekly “Blew’s wide-ranging essays focus on Western women writing, on education, archaeology, ancestry. To her, stories need not be romantic, despairing, simplistic or single-voiced, nor even reflect landscape. But in their search
